Checklist

Product Checklist

ChecklistAt the product range’s development stage a comprehensive survey was conducted on all medical examination lights. This revealed shortcomings and ongoing problems encountered with some other products. Specifier/customer feedback determined that our new designs should focus on making improvements to the following points:

  • Energy saving light sources.
  • Reliability.
  • Ease of movement.
  • Stability.
  • Ease of cleaning to assist infection control.
  • Space saving designs.
  • Ease of installation.
  • Minimal maintenance supported by readily available and affordable spare parts.

The check list summarises the customer feedback points that needed to be addressed in existing medical examination lights, followed by MSL’s design and manufacturing improvement responses. These points should be considered when evaluating, selecting or specifying medical examination lights.

ARM MOVEMENT

Arm MovementProblems:

The majority of product brands use spring balanced arms or in some cases gasstrut movements. Both of these methods can present potential problems and they are not long term, low maintenance solutions.

Spring Balanced Arms

  • Springs lose tension over time. They need to be retensioned and possibly eventually replaced depending on work load.
  • They require complex support components, e.g. levers, control arms, pins etc.which all wear and can be subject to failure.

Gas Struts

  • Weaken over time and need replacing.
  • Leak oil.
  • Also require other complex support components to make system workable.

MSL:

  • A counter balance arm movement providing the following features:
  • Simple in principle.
  • Minimal or no maintenance required.
  • Effortlessly repositionable and drift free.
  • Easy rotation and positioning of the light.
  • Robust construction CNC machined joints with adjustable friction incorporating brass and acetal bushes, also stainless steel axles.
  • Provides extended reach for full patient coverage.

CLEANING

CleaningProblems:

  • Difficult areas for cleaning e.g. holes gaps recesses ledges etc.
  • These can all be a problem with spring balanced arms and gas strut arms.

MSL:

  • To assist cleaning MSL maximise the use of round smooth surfaces. All metal construction with powder coated, anodised and chrome plated finishes for durability and resistance to cleaning agents. Series 1 & 3 models have a removable handle for sterilisation (autoclavable).

LIGHT HEADS

Light HeadsProblems:

  • Plastic construction which can discolour over time.
  • Some metal light heads have high operating surface temperatures and build-up of heat causes early component failures (lampholders, switches, LEDs, halogen lamps).
  • Limited range of movement.

MSL:

  • All metal construction.
  • Rotates at both the light head and yoke allowing accurate positioning of the light to where it is required.
  • Vented construction design, self cooling air circulation resulting in comfortable operation.
  • To further minimise heat build up, LED and halogen lamps have purpose designed heat sinks.
  • High quality electrical components for longer service life, i.e. Teflon coated high temperature cable – ceramic lampholders – heavy duty switches.
  • Light HeadsSwitches have their own separate enclosures to avoid heat build-up.
  • In the event of a component failure in the light head the complete head assembly is removable by undoing one screw and disconnecting a make and break electrical connector. A replacement head can be installed in minutes, allowing repairs to be carried out in the workshop. This special MSL feature was requested by maintenance staff working in busy hospitals where downtime of equipment is an important issue.
  • Easy lamp replacement.
  • The MSL 3 light head design gives an overlapping beam pattern minimising shadowing.

LIGHT SOURCES

Light Sources HalogenProblems:

  • Halogen Lamps – inefficient low cost brands are widely used. They have a much lower light output compared to the IRC type and a short service life.
  • Compact Fluorescent – sometimes used. They do not comply with the Cyanosis Observation Lighting Standard.
  • LEDs – like halogen lamps there are also many low cost brands. They have focussed their development on brightness rather than achieving a high Colour Rendering Index (CRI) and consequently are not suitable for medical examination lighting tasks. Lesser quality light sources will impair the examination light’s overall performance.

MSL:

  • Halogen Lamps – only supply IRC energy saving lamps.
  • LEDs – only supply the high efficiency 15W 7-LED light source module
  • specifically designed for medical lighting tasks
  • Colour Rendering Index (CRI 93).

CYANOSIS OBSERVATION LIGHTING

Problems:

  • Do not comply with the Australian/New Zealand Standard (AS1680.2.5:1997).

MSL:

  • The 15W 7-LED module has been independently tested and complies with the Australian/New Zealand Standard (AS1680.2.5:1997).

SAFETY GLASSES

Safety GlassesProblems:

  • Some lights do not have a safety glass or they have a toughened float glass which has a greenish colour due to its iron content.

MSL:
Have toughened low iron extra-white safety glass. Its benefits are:

  • Extremely clear, does not have the greenish colour of float glass.
  • Very high light transmission properties, without falsifying colours.
  • Less heat build up, resulting in lower surface temperature.

COLOUR CORRECTION FILTERS

Problems:

  • Colour correction filters are not readily available.

MSL:

  • For halogen lamp models they are available as an ex-stock item. They aid illuminating skin tones, tissue clarity and improving recognition of blood vessels.

CEILING MOUNTS

Ceiling MountsProblems:

  • Many brands are only available to suit limited standard heights, this means the light could be mounted too high or below the required Australian standard.

MSL:

  • Manufactures each mount to the exact ceiling height requirement (ceiling heights must be specified at time of order).

360° CONTINUOUS ROTATION – CEILING MOUNT MODELS

Problems:

  • Not always available as an option.

MSL:

  • *Supplies a 360° continuous rotating ceiling connector at the upper rotation ceiling joint. Note: this is a standard feature on the Series 3 model. It is an optional extra on the Series 1 model.

MOBILE TROLLEY

Mobile TrolleyProblems:

  • Limited light adjustment and movement.
  • Unstable.
  • Not a space saving design.

MSL:

  • Counter balanced arm allows light head to have maximum vertical sweep and adjustment.
  • Robust and easily manoeuvrable.
  • Completely folds down for easy transport and storage.
  • Stable five leg base with two opposing braked wheels.

ELECTRICAL CABLES

Problems:

  • Exposed cables give cleaning problems. Can have wear points and prone to damage at moveable joints.

MSL:

  • Have fully enclosed low voltage cables and there are no wear points at joints.

POWER SUPPLIES/TRANSFORMERS

Ceiling MountProblems:

  • Quality issues, replacements not being readily available and expensive.
  • Many light fittings have remote power supplies/transformers resulting in higher installation costs due to locating in the ceiling or wall space, this also creates ongoing maintenance issues.

MSL:

  • Only use high quality power supplies/transformers which are ex-stock items.
  • All the MSL examination light range have an integral power supply/transformer. Access is not required into the ceiling or wall space after installation. This is an essential requirement for “Clean Room” environments.

CARDIAC PROTECTED MODELS

Problems:

  • Some products do not comply with cardiac protection requirements.

MSL:

  • All MSL Series 1 & 3 models comply with cardiac protection requirements.

INSTALLATION

Problems:

  • Difficult and labour intensive to install.

MSL:

  • Designed and manufactured with a view to assist installation and servicing. All models are supplied as a number of pre-assembled components. Contractors and end users have confirmed installation cost savings.

MAINTENANCE and SPARE PART

Spare PartsProblems:

  • Difficult to service and repair.
  • Availability and cost of spare parts.

MSL:

  • Designed and manufactured in Australia providing all the benefits of locally designed and manufactured products, i.e. readily available spare parts – cost effective – ongoing product development.

WARRANTY

SurgeryProblems:

  • Having warranties honoured.

MSL:

  • Supported by a reputable 5 year limited warranty. (Component exceptions are halogen lamps and lampholders, power supplies/transformers and switches – these are subject to their manufacturers warranty). See our full warranty details on the catalogue page.

APPROVALS and TEST CERTIFICATES

Problems:

  • Obtaining evidence of the necessary approval certificates, e.g. C-Tick – TGA certification.
  • Obtaining copies of independent test results verifying performance claims, e.g. lux levels – colour temperatures – CRI – COI.

MSL:

  • Complies with all relevant medical examination lighting standards and requirements. Copies of current approvals and test certificates available on request.
